‘Goosebumps when he saluted’: Army felicitates ex-drill instructor on 100th birthday, Anand Mahindra

The value of an Army officer to the country is enormous. Drills are crucial in shaping soldiers’ key characteristics of discipline and fitness. Army authorities made a polite gesture in honour of Major Swamy when he turned 100. Major Swamy was a former drill teacher at the National Defence Academy who trained seven Indian Army generals. Business tycoon Anand Mahindra recently released a video of himself being honoured for turning 100, inspiring internet users.

The Mahindra Group chairman posted a video of Major Swamy exiting an Army jeep. He is shown being placed in a wheelchair and transported to the location with the utmost respect and care thanks to the assistance of other officers. Soldiers are seen rising up for the march and extending a formal salute to Major Swamy as he faces them. Amidst the sound of gun salutes, he stands tall and confidently on stage. Finally, he also extends a strong salute.

Mahindra had shivers when he saw Major Swamy salute at the age of 100. “Sub Major Swamy, ex Drill Instructor of the National Defence Academy being felicitated on his 100th birthday. He Instructed 7 Indian Army Generals” Army as well as Indian tradition of enduring respect for our Gurus. I had goosebumps when he saluted. This is my #MondayMotivation,” Mahindra said in a tweet.

Netizens were also inspired by Major Swamy’s vigour and the way the Army bestowed him with respect. Tamil actor Prasanna commented, “At 100 the way he holds his head high and his firm salute,..is truly inspiring. Thanks for sharing sir.” A user wrote, “He served for the Nation and he deserves it from the Nation. Happy to see he was honoured like this. Utmost example of seva.” A third user commented, “Seriously sir.. So touched… Very very very very proud of our soldiers… Jai hind 🇮🇳 jai jawan.”
