Meghalaya: ‘Conrad Sangma has betrayed us,’ say the enraged village heads
Villagers who came to see Chief Minister Conrad Sangma over the boundary settlement between Assam and Meghalaya believed the Chief Minister had betrayed them.
Headmen of seven disputed villages said they were misled by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma because they were driven against the door and had no definite answer in sight.
They were disappointed that they weren’t be able to meet with the Chief Minister on Tuesday.
Sangma had invited the headmen of Maikhuli, Iongkhuli, Patharkuchi, Maiong, and Pahamkoncha villages in the Ri-Bhoi district, as well as two others from villages under Jirang in the West Khasi Hills area, to see him at the Secretariat.
“We had made an appointment, but we weren’t allowed to enter the gate at first.” We were told he had a meeting later while we waited outside his room. Then we were told he wouldn’t be able to meet us,” Maikhuli chief Kleden Sangma explained.
“He has betrayed us,” he added, disappointed with the outcome of their efforts to meet with the Chief Minister. We will protest or go to the Supreme Court if necessary. We’ll continue to scrutinize any deal that keeps us out of the Sixth Schedule,” the headman added.
