Meghalaya: CUET is not required for admission to private colleges says CM

Conrad K Sangma, the state’s chief minister, announced on Tuesday that students seeking admission to undergraduate courses offered by private colleges or state-funded colleges will not be have to take the CUET.

He said he notified Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday that the CUET will be mandatory for all colleges associated with the central university.

Pradhan, he added, agreed with the notion that students seeking admission to UG courses should be able to choose between a private college and a state-funded college for the CUET.

Students studying at colleges 200 kilometers distant from NEHU, for example, will never apply or have any intention of continuing their studies at NEHU, according to the chief minister.

These students, he noted, might opt to stay in their specific districts or locations.

“Then why should those pupils show up for this core exam?” “This means that 90 percent of the state’s colleges will not be required to take the common admission examination,” Sangma explained.

He stated that students interested in the UG programmes offered by NEHU must take the common admission exam.

“NEHU contains a law school, agriculture school, and so on,” Sangma told reporters. “Anything within the NEHU’s two campuses, students will have to appear for the CUET.”

Students applying for admission to connected colleges, including private and government-aided institutions, would not be required to take the CUET, according to the chief minister.

Meanwhile, student bodies in Agartala have protested CUET and are attempting to move it back.
