The NITI Aayog’s State Energy & Climate Index (SECI) Round 1 results were released on Monday, and Meghalaya was ranked sixth among eight smaller states.
Goa, Tripura, and Manipur came out on top in this category. The results are based on data from the academic year 2019-20.
The SECI Round 1 evaluates states on six criteria: (1) DISCOM performance, (2) energy access, affordability, and reliability, (3) clean energy initiatives, (4) energy efficiency, (5) environmental sustainability, and (6) new initiatives.
Meghalaya scored 29.4 on the SECI scale. Among the smaller states, the state had the lowest marks in the categories of Clean Energy Initiatives and Energy Efficiency. The state received a score of 39.8 for environmental sustainability and a 2.8 for innovative projects.
DISCOM gave Meghalaya a 47.9 rating for accessibility, affordability, and dependability, but only a 30.9 grade for accessibility, affordability, and reliability. In the categories of Clean Energy Initiatives and Energy Efficiency, the state scored 1.9 and 4 points, respectively.
Larger states, smaller states, and UTs have been classified based on their size and geographical distinctions. In the category of larger states, Gujarat, Kerala, and Punjab have been recognized as the top three achievers.
Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog, stated that attempts to achieve Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Panchamrit” aims outlined at COP-26 in Glasgow should be turned into a people’s movement.
The role of the states, he continued, will be important in accomplishing this. States’ governance innovation and mutual learning will go a long way toward improving outcomes, he said, and the SECI Round 1 is the first move in that regard.
