Mizoram: Smugglers arrested while transporting Exotic wild animals
Police recovered nine exotic wild animals from Vairengte in Mizoram that were being smuggled to Assam. Among the animals rescued are two capybaras and seven gray monkeys, said police station chief H Lalchawimawia. On Wednesday, they also arrested two men identified as John Lalramnghaka, 39, and Lalremruata, 20, for transporting the animals.
Lalchawimawia claimed that they were attempting to determine the source of the animals’ smuggling and that they will be delivered to the appropriate government organisations.
The Champhai district, which borders Myanmar, was raided by the Mizoram Police in May, and 468 exotic species creatures were found there. Five persons were also detained. Among the saved creatures were four tortoises, 11 snakes, 442 lizards, four-toed sloths, two beavers, one wild cat, and four pattos.
Between February 2021 and July 2022, Mizoram saw the rescue of at least 94 exotic animals, including 29 leopard tortoises, 38 red-footed tortoises, 3 albino iguanas, and 2 pythons.
