The Twitter handle of NASA Exoplanet shared a audio clip of the sound coming out of a supermassive black hole. The shared clip took many by surprise. some said it sounded like ‘Om’ while others commented the sound was haunting. “The misconception that there is no sound in space originate because most space is a – vacuum, providing no way for the sound waves to travel.” tweeted NASA Exoplanet on the microblogging site. A galaxy cluster on the other hand has ample amount of gases that helped to picked the sound, mentioned the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
The space is silent and no one can hear a thing as the sound waves do not have any medium to travel. But the recent Audio clip proves the opposite, making it obvious for scientific research. NASA tested with the noise of space with the blackhole that centers the Perseus galaxy. The sound was amplified and mixed with other data, as mentioned by NASA.
The Perseus galaxy is 240.1 million light years away from earth and it’s blackhole has been researched by NASA for sound since 2003. It was in the same year when sound signal was generated by the blackhole in the form of data from NASA’s Chandra X- ray Observatory. It was only now that the sound has been brought into the hearing range of the human ear.
“In some ways, this sonification is unlike any other done before… because it revisits the actual sound waves discovered in data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, in this new sonification of Perseus, the sound waves astronomers previously identified were extracted and made audible for the first time.” NASA said in a statement.
