Disaster after disaster is occuring in the Northeast; the latest report of one of these disasters is from Manipur in NorthEast India. A significant landslide that blocked the flow of a river in the Noney district of Manipur on Thursday resulted in at least one death.
As more individuals go missing and the search continues, officials warned that the death toll is sure to rise.
Around midnight on Wednesday, a landslide occurred close to the Tupul yard railway construction site, which is located close to the Makhuam area and roughly 14 north-east of Noney police station.
According to a police officer, the identification of the deceased person whose body was found on Thursday morning has not yet been determined.
An advisory notice from the deputy commissioner of Noney district claimed that the Ijai river, which flows through Tamenglong and Noney districts, has been blocked by the debris, creating a dam-like storage condition that, if ruptured, will cause devastation to the low-lying sections of Noney district.
Additionally, the NH 37 should be avoided by travellers (Imphal-jiri highway).
The Indian Army and Assam Rifles are now conducting rescue operations. 13 people had been saved as of 5:30 a.m., according to the PRO Defence Wing. It said, “The Army helicopters are ready and waiting for the weather to clear.”
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of Manipur called an emergency meeting to take stock of the situation at the earliest.
