Bharat Ek Khoj is a 53-episode television series in 1988 that dramatically unfolds the 5000-year history of India from its beginnings to the coming of Indian Independence in 1947. It is a series of explorations into the different periods of Indian history political, social and cultural.
This serial is based on Jawaharlal Nehru’s celebrated book, “The Discovery of India”. The episodes are anchored by the actor Roshan Seth who plays the role of Jawaharlal Nehru. It was produced and directed by Shyam Benegal and telecast every Sunday on Doordarshan in 53 episodes that ran for a whole year. As today India has completed its 75th anniversary of Independence Day and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s beautifully explained ” Bharat Mata Ki Jai” slogan has been focused on this day.
In the video clips, Nehru asked the farmers, “Who is this Bharat Mata, whose victory you wish?”, and then explained that “the mountains and rivers, forests and fields are of course dear to everyone” but what counted ultimately “is the people of India…”.
