On August 26, the Gauhati High Court dismissed a social worker’s appeal and issued an injunction against the state government’s intention to shut off mobile internet access on August 28 and September 11 in order to accommodate the Grade III and IV recruitment exams.
Notably, a petition before Gauhati High Court opposing the government’s decision was dismissed today. An earlier writ case was filed in the Guwahati High Court by a social worker residing in Guwahati to contest the government order that shut off internet access in the state between August 21 and August 28 in an effort to stop exam cheating.
With the aid of the Internet Freedom Foundation, a group that promotes nett neutrality, freedom of expression, privacy, and innovation, the petitioner Raju Prasad Sarma has filed a writ petition in this respect. In a tweet on August 23, the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF) claimed to have helped Sarma submit the writ petition.
“IMPORTANT: We’ve assisted Mr Raju Prasad Sarma, a social worker from Kamrup, Assam in filing a writ petition in Guwahati HC to challenge the #internetshutdown ordered to take place in Assam on Aug 21 & 28. The shutdown is to prevent cheating in exams,” IFF tweeted.
