On Wednesday, fuel prices were raised by another 80 paise per litre, making it the 14th price increase in 16 days. After a four-and-a-half-month gap in rate revision, which concluded on March 22, petrol and diesel prices have risen by Rs10 per litre in the last 16 days.
Rates differ by state and local taxation, with Mumbai having the highest fuel rates among metro cities.
According to the latest declaration by state-owned fuel merchants, petrol costs 105.41 per litre in Delhi, while diesel costs 96.67 per litre. In Mumbai, the price of petrol and diesel per litre was quoted at 120.51 per litre, up 84 paise, and 104.77 per litre, up 85 paise.
The price of petrol in Guwahati has risen to 105.81 rupees, while the price of diesel has risen to 91.55 rupees. Meanwhile, in Shillong, Meghalaya’s state capital, petrol prices have risen to Rs 103.80, with diesel at Rs 89.74.
Opposition parties have been hammering the Centre over the unabated rise in gasoline and diesel prices.
Despite the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on crude oil prices around the world, India’s gasoline price spike was only 5% between April 2021 and March 2022, according to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Fuel prices have risen by more than 50% in certain industrialised and developing countries as a result of the war, he continued.
“We are not the only country affected by the war,” the minister added, noting that gasoline prices had increased by more than 50% in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, and Sri Lanka.
