Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa

UNP (United National Party) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the new Prime Minister by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa a short while ago. A man who was the only national seat in Parliament from his party rose as the PM!

Ranil Wickremesinghe has been appointed Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister. Ranil having lost the general election, entered Parliament only on a national list seat, months after the election.

Sri Lanka, which s struggling with a hard-hitting economic crisis, was fallen over into violence on Monday as Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stepped down from his post, nulling the elected government.

In his speech, President Rajapaksa said to “control the current situation, and prevent the country from heading towards anarchy”, he would assign a Prime Minister and Cabinet “that can command a majority in Parliament and can gain the confidence of the people of the country”.
