According to The Guardian, women across Ukraine are dealing with the prospect of rape as a weapon of war, with more evidence of sexual abuse surfacing from places retaken from retreating Russian soldiers.
A photograph snapped by Mikhail Palinchak on a highway 20 kilometres outside of Kiev on Sunday horrified the globe, showing the bodies of one male and three women stacked under a blanket. According to the photographer, the women were naked and their bodies had been partially burned.
According to The Guardian, the graphic image adds to a growing body of evidence that summary executions, rape, and torture have been employed against civilians in Russian-controlled areas
The scope of sexual abuse is particularly difficult for many to fathom. Women and girls have come forward to tell the police, journalists, and human rights organisations about the crimes they have suffered at the hands of Russian soldiers as Russian troops have withdrawn from towns and suburbs around the capital in order to refocus the war effort on Ukraine’s east.
The investigators uncovered gang rapes, assaults carried out under duress, and rapes carried out in front of children, according to the study.
Ukrainian women may have to defend themselves from more than just Russian soldiers. A teacher complained to authorities in Vinnytsia, a town in the country’s west, that a member of the territory defence services dragged her into the school library and attempted to rape her. The man was taken into custody.
“When a woman flees, it appears that she is secure because she is far away from the weapons and the man who raped her,” “However, the trauma is a bomb inside her that never goes away. The magnitude of what is currently taking place is sad.” said Sasha Kantser, external affairs manager for Feminist Workshop’s Lviv branch, which has assisted hundreds of displaced women and girls since the war began.
