Supreme Court says, Guwahati's Kamakhya Temple is not properly maintained

The state's highest judicial body expressed displeasure of the cleanliness of one of Guwahati's most significant religious sites in the Assam state. The Supreme Court of India noted that the Kamakhya Temple in Assam was not receiving proper maintenance and that there can be no compromising on hygiene when it comes to a public area of such importance. This observation was made by the Supreme Court of India's bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and C. T. Ravikumar. This important holy site's upkeep was the topic under consideration. In this instance, numerous letters complaining that the temple's administration is not upholding proper hygienic standards were sent by visitors to the temple.

"The temple was not properly maintained when I visited over the holidays. This is my own personal viewpoint. The standard of hygiene cannot be compromised, said Justice Rastogi.

In the hearing, senior attorney Rajeev Dhavan spoke on behalf of the temple. He informed the court that the issues had been resolved at the temple. In order to find an appropriate solution to the hygiene and cleanliness issue, professional organizations like the Indian Institute of Technology have been involved. In order to give the parties a chance to reach a mutually agreeable resolution, the supreme court postponed the case's hearing until January 2023. The elected Dolois (priests) who represent the Kamakhya Devalaya members Bordeuri Samaj had already filed a contempt petition in December 2021, accusing the Kamakhya Debutter Board of misappropriating funds.
