According to reports from ST, the State Rescue Team (SRT), the Fire and Emergency Service (F&ES), and personnel from the Umiam police station have started an effort to recover the body of the driver of a passenger vehicle who is reported to have plunged into the Umiam Lake at around 4.30 am on Thursday.
A team was dispatched to the Umiam bridge to undertake an investigation after police got information that a passenger car (ML05 Y 7753) was abandoned and laying on the bridge, according to the police. The automobile key was discovered to be inside the car during the initial investigation. Police also discovered the driver's jacket from the bridge, a mobile phone, and other items.
Police reported that the driver, Skhemborlang Kharmawphlang, of Mawlai Mawtawar, had jumped into the lake after which a day-long search effort was initiated to recover the body but without success.
Friday will see a continuation of the hunt, according to authorities.
