Supreme Court To Hear Plea Of The Rape Victim Of Unnao, The Next Week
On Tuesday, the supreme court agreed to hear a plea of the Unnao rape survivor next week. ‘List next week’, said a Bench led by Chief Justice, NV Ramana, JK Maheswari, and Hima Kohli after the submission of advocate Vrinda Grover on urgent hearing of the fresh plea of the rape survivor. The Unnao rape survivor seeks to transfer of a criminal case filed by the father of one of the accused from a trial court in UP to Delhi. A Delhi court in December 2019 announced life imprisonment to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar for sexually assaulting and harassing a girl from the Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh in 2017 when she was a minor. Recently, a local court at Unnao has given a non-bailable warrant against the survivor on a criminal complaint of alleged cheating and forgery filed by the father of Subham Singh, one of the accused being tried in the Unnao rape case in a Delhi court. In 2017, a minor girl from the Unnao district of Uttar Pradesh was allegedly raped by BJP’s MLA Kuldeep Sengar. The victim’s family tried to report
and file an FIR but the police turned back on them. According to the family, the police told them to compromise for the fact that Sengar was an MLA from BJP. Seeing no hope from the side of the police the family reports the case to the court and yet there was no action taken from the end of police.
In April 2018, the victim’s father was falsely implicated in the Connection with arms act case. Later the rape victim tried to kill herself by burning herself alive in front of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath’s house. On the very next day, the victim’s father died in police custody which led to speculation that resulted in the high-level inquiry that was ordered into the incident. An investigation team was also formed to investigate the entire situation. National Human Right Commission asked for a detailed report on the entire case. Due to the nationwide outrage, the government of Uttar Pradesh passed the case from the police to the CBI. Kuldeep Sengar was finally arrested on 12 April 2018. From getting a threatening call by the victims to a criminal case of forgery on the victim’s family, there have been multiple attempts to make the case completely void.
Given the entire situation, the chief justice of India ordered the transfer of five cases related to the Unnao incident. The victim was given direct protection and awarded 25 lakh as interim. A Delhi court, in December 2019 sentenced Sengar to life imprisonment.
