Tawang: Know Arunachal Pradesh’s stunning beauty and rich history
Recent years have seen a sluggish but steady increase in Tawang tourism. The district of Tawang in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh was created by dividing up West Kameng. The well-known Tawang Monastery is located in a town by the same name. Due to the fact that it was once a Tibetan territory, both the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of China claim it.
Tawang, which is 10,000 feet above sea level, is bordered by Bhutan to the south-west, the happiest nation in the world, Tibet to the north, and SeLa Pass to the east. The Monpas, who live in Tawang, are found at lower elevations and enjoy a cool, temperate environment.
Due to the dangerous and rocky roads, travelling in Tawang can be a little challenging. However, gradually more people are beginning to come here to enjoy its beauty and charm. The Tawang Monastery, the biggest Buddhist monastery in India, is the main draw. As the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama, this location holds special significance for Tibetan Buddhists.
This hilly destination is surrounded by beautiful glacial lakes in and around the valley with crystal clear blue waters. Encircled by lofty and magnificent mountains, Tawang is a feast for the eyes.
Beautiful glacial lakes with glistening blue waters are dotted across the valley of this steep location. Tawang is a visual feast, encircled by towering and majestic mountains.
Tawang is derived from the local Monpa dialect words ‘Ta’ and ‘Wang’. ‘Ta’ refers to horse, ‘Wang’ to green pastures. An interpretation of the local legend holds that a Tibetan monk named Mera Lama discovered a strong and beautiful horse wandering in the valley during the 17th century. It was the Lama who tried to capture this elegant animal after being attracted to it.
However, the horse disappeared, and Mera Lama discovered a location that was incredibly tranquil and calming while looking for it. At the site, he constructed a magnificent Buddhist monastery. Later known as Tawang, the town that grew up around this monastery.
