Teacher Seen Beating a minor Dalit Student for Skipping Classes in a Viral Video .
The teacher named Subramania, a physics teacher, was seen in a viral video beating a student aged 17 studying in class 12 for skipping or not attending classes. The incident occured in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore District. The minor belonged to Dalit Community & hence the relavant sections of Schedule Caste & Schedule Tribes ( Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 and other sections of IPC (45 of 1860) viz; Section 323 ( Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt ), Section 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means ) read with Section 75 of Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection of Children ) Act 2015, for ‘ punishment for cruelty to children .
The student filed a police complaint with video evidence, the said teacher was identified, arrested &
remanded under judicial custody.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police in Chidambaram told TNM that, “The teacher beat up the student
for not coming to his classes. After the video emerged of the incident, the teacher was arrested and has
been remanded. He was booked under sections of SC/ST Act and relevant sections of the IPC. There is no
communal angle in this,”
Speaking to TNM, the headmaster of the government school had said, “The eight students came to school
on Wednesday and attended the first hour. But as it was physics class in the second hour and because
Subramanian, the teacher, conducts daily class tests, these eight students decided to skip the class.”
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had written to the Cuddalore District
Collector to take action in the case after the video went viral.
