On Monday (June 6), new protests erupted by UG students in Kolkata, with university students taking to the streets to demand online exams on College Street. Students at Calcutta University are conducting an agitation against the university’s decision to hold offline semester exams, according to images provided.
This comes as Calcutta University announced on Friday that all future semester exams will be held on paper, rejecting demands from a group of agitated undergraduate students who want online testing, which were the norm during the two years when the Covid-19 pandemic raged across the country. Students, on the other hand, are unwilling to accept this and are asking that this semester’s exams be held in offline mode.
Calcutta University’s senior panel made the decision to conduct offline exams after thorough consideration.
The members of the Syndicate, the institution’s top decision-making body, “unanimously” chose to conduct the upcoming semester exams in offline mode, according to CU Vice-Chancellor Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee.
Calcutta University students have been protesting against offline exams because the majority of classes are held online. Around 200 students recently rallied outside the university’s main campus on College Street, arguing that two months of classroom instruction was insufficient to complete a six-month semester’s syllabus and hold off-campus exams.
In the meantime, the Kolkata police have been chastised for their treatment of the students who were demonstrating.
Netizens took to social media sharing the act of the police personnel’s against the protested students claiming the it is the right to protest under Article 11 for every Indian citizens.
