An employee of the Uttar Pradesh Power Department committed suicide, purportedly after a senior official told him that if he wanted a transfer, he could “send his wife for a night.”
Gokul Prasad, 45, was enraged and humiliated when he poured diesel over himself outside the junior engineer’s office in Lakhimpur and set himself on fire. He was brought to the hospital, where he died on Sunday while receiving treatment.
Nagendra Kumar, a junior engineer, and a clerk have been suspended, and a police report has been filed.
Gokul Prasad is seen in excruciating pain in a video filmed after he set himself on fire, narrating what motivated him to take such drastic measures. He claims that the junior engineer and his aide harassed him, and that he went to the police for help but received none.
His wife claims the accused has been torturing Gokul for three years in another video. “He became depressed and began taking medication, but he was not spared by the authorities. He had been relocated to Aliganj and was having trouble getting there. As a result, he requested a move that would allow him to be closer to his family. “Get your wife to sleep with us, and we’ll get you transferred,” they urged him “she expressed herself.
