Watch: In this Maharashtra village, kids risk their life, crosses river to reach school
Children in some areas still face significant obstacles to attending school, despite the fact that motorways, tunnels, and expressways are being built to connect cities across India and make travelling between states easier. In the Nashik area of Maharashtra, they must swim across a river because there is neither a road nor a bridge to get them to the other side.
In a video published by the news agency ANI, a group of school-aged children were seen entering a big container and being carried by a few guys across the deep Suki river in Peth taluka, Nashik. The children were wearing their school uniforms and carrying their backpacks.
Because there isn’t a bridge to cross the river, the locals have complained that this is the only way the kids can get to school. Many parents force their kids to cross the river every day while they sit on their shoulders, and other parents refuse to send their kids to school out of concern that something bad might happen while they are crossing the river.
The river is deep, but since kids need to get to school, we either carry them on our shoulders or in large utensils. We want that a bridge be built by the administration, a local told ANI.
