A 48-year-old woman from Boisar in Palghar district died after she suffered serious internal
injuries in a fight. The family members of her daughter’s friend allegedly beat her up over a petty
dispute in Maharashtra on Monday.
“Preeti Prasad, a 20-year-old college-going student, the daughter of the deceased had put up a
WhatsApp status on her mobile phone did not go down well with her 17-year-old friend
who lives in the same neighborhood. Her friend thought it was directed towards her and took
offense to it”, Boisar police station’s senior inspector Suresh Kadam said.
Kadam has refused to provide information even on the nature of the WhatsApp status, saying
there was “nothing specific in the status about the 17-year-old girl or anyone else”.
On February 10, the other girl’s mother and siblings went to victim Lilavati Devi Prasad’s house
in Shivaji Nagar and allegedly thrashed her and other members of her family.
Prasad suffered serious injuries and was rushed to a hospital nearby where she died the next
day while undergoing treatment.
Preeti Prasad, the daughter of the deceased, told reporters on Sunday that her WhatsApp post
was a general one and not directed towards her friend.
Based on her complaint, the police arrested the other girl’s mother and two more family
members and registered an FIR under section 304 of the Indian Penal Codecasa against them
(culpable homicide not amounting to murder)
“We arrested the mother, brother, and sister over Saturday and Sunday. They were produced
before a magistrate court and police have got their custody till February 15. I cannot disclose
the Whatsapp status but there was no need for the minor to take it personally,” said the inspector
Suresh Kadam, head of Boisar police station official said.
The accused were produced before a local magistrate who remanded them in police custody till
February 15. And the minor girl has been sent to a correction home
