Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh are the two states that receive 140.65 million and 86.12 million domestic visitors, respectively, each year.
According to a report by the Union Tourism Ministry, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu received the most visits from foreign tourists in 2021, with 1.26 million and 1.23 million, respectively. On World Tourism Day, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar presented the more than 280-page paper titled “India Tourism Statistics 2022” at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
According to the analysis, COVID-19-related restrictions caused a drop in foreign visitor arrivals (FTAs) to India in 2021 from 2.74 million in 2020 to 1.52 million, representing a negative increase of 44.5 percent.
According to the data, there were 3,18,673 foreign visitors overall in 2021–22, a decrease of 23.4% from 4,15,859 in 2020–21.
Sharing data about the footfall at various sites under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), the report said the Taj Mahal was the most popular centrally-protected ticketed monument for domestic visitors in 2021-22, while the Group of Monuments at Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu was the most visited centrally-protected ticketed monument for foreign visitors during the same period.
In 2021-22, the total number of domestic visitors stood at 2,60,46,891, while the corresponding figure in 2020-21 was 1,31,53,076, marking a 98 per cent on-year growth.
The two states with the most domestic tourists visiting are Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh with 140.65 million and 86.12 million, respectively.
According to the research, the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO world heritage site, was among the top 10 centrally protected ticketed sites for domestic tourists in 2021–2022.
The Red Fort and the Qutub Minar, both UNESCO-recognized structures in Delhi, came in second and third place, respectively, behind the Mughal-era mausoleum, which took the top spot.
According to the research, India saw 677.63 million domestic tourists in 2021, up 11.05 percent from 610.22 million in 2020.
