A high-speed water pipeline at the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation’s (NEEPCO) hydropower station here ruptured owing to rainstorm overflow, killing at least three people. Employees of NEEPCO were identified among the deceased.
According to accounts, the incident occurred at 11.30 a.m on Saturday. on a high-speed water pipeline of the 100MW Khandong Power Project Distribution on the Kopili River. The water level in the river rose due to heavy rain in Meghalaya, according to a NEEPCO official. The pipeline exploded due to a blockage created by stone and damaged trees.
“Water flows at a high rate from Meghalaya, but large stones and damaged trees can form a blockage, releasing a lot of energy.” The pipeline erupted in this case due to a blockage, and three employees were caught in the flow. “Two hours later, their bodies were discovered,” the official added on condition of anonymity.
Anupam Saikia (35), an assistant engineer, Jayanta Hazarika (59), a senior manager, and Demeraj Johari (30), a contractual labourer, were among those killed.
According to Jayant Singh, the Superintendent of Police for the Dima Hasao (NC Hills) region, the three employees killed because some trees fell on them and they were unable to flee due to the tremendous flow of water.
