The Supreme Court has ordered the release of AG Perarivalan, one of the convicted criminals in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, who was arrested at the age of 19, in June 1991 and spent over 31 years in jail as part of his life sentence. However, the convicted of murder has released on 18, May and he received a tremendous welcome from his family, relatives, and several pro-Tamil outfits in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.
AG Perarivalan, his mother Arputhammal, and other members of their family meet MDMK ( Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) chief Vaiko in Chennai. Following which Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai on Thursday took objection to the DMK government, including Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin, on “celebrating” the release of A G Perarivalan, one of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, K Annamalai said that they have forgotten the “fact” that he has been set free on “technicalities” and not pronounced “innocent.”
After all the hardships to those families of 16 people who lost lives on the blast were yet far to get justice because a man who supposed to be behind bar has been out freely and has been celebrating, attending meetings with state chief minister. He is one of those who is accused in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassinations in Sriperumbudur at 10:20 p.m. The woman assassin, Dhanu, triggers a belt bomb and kills Gandhi and 16 others.
He was arrested after the investigation by CBI on June 11, 1991, when he was 19-year-old and was booked under the Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) like others accused in the case.
His death penalty was shipped to life term imprisonment after a Supreme Court verdict on 18 February 2014. On 19 February 2014, Government of Tamil Nadu announced its decision to release him along with six other convicts. Having been granted bail by the Supreme Court, Perarivalan was released on bail on 15 March 2022. On May 18, the Supreme Court orders release of Perarivalan, 31 years after he was arrested.
