Eleven people were detained in Assam for alleged links to global terror outfits such as Al-Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Bangladesh-based Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT). Madrassa teachers were also among those detained.
They include 11 people from Morigaon, Barpeta, Guwahati and Goalpara districts of Assam who are allegedly “connected to Islamic fundamentalism,” having links to AQIS and ABT.
The law will be followed. While criticising the state’s “Jihadi modules,” Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the arrests will provide a lot of information.
Mustafa alias Mufti Mustafa, an accused in the case, is a native of Saharia Gaon in the Morigaon district and an active member of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), which is affiliated to Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent, according to the Assam Police (AQIS). According to the authorities, Mustafa manages a madrassa (Jamiul Huda Madrassa) in the Saharia Gaon village, which has been sealed by the police.

Afsaruddin Bhuyan, 39, of Morigaon, was also detained with Mustafa. Abbas Ali, 22, of Goalpara, was apprehended by police. According to the authorities, “he supplied logistics and housing to one of the absconding members, Mehbubur Rehman.” Mehbubur Rehman, also known as Mehbub, is a wanted person in the Jogighopa PS case and a member of the Ansarullah Bangla Team. On July 26, he was apprehended by the Bongaigaon police unit.
Jubair Khan (25), Rafiqul Islam (27), Dewan Hamidul Islam (20), Moinul Haque (42), Kajibur Hussain (37), Muzibaur Rahman (50), Shahanur Aslam, and Sahjahan Ali were also arrested (34). Barpeta Police have detained eight people in connection with AQIS and ABT.
A case (number 763/22) has been registered at the Barpeta police station in accordance with Sections 120(b)/121/121(A) IPC and 17/18/18(B)/19/20 UA(P) Act, 1967, and these accused will be produced in the Barpeta court today.
Assam Special DGP (Law and Order) G.P. Singh stated that 11 people were arrested in the state in the last 48 hours for allegedly having links with terrorist groups. The police have been conducting surveillance in order to bust the state’s terror racket.
According to the state DGP, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, AQIS is increasing its foothold in north-east India. According to the Assam top officer, al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri recently issued an appeal to his organisations to infiltrate in Assam.
