On Monday, Assam reported 351 COVID-19 positive cases and two fatalities, up from 156 instances on Sunday, with the overall positivity rate jumping from 0.79 percent to 0.96 percent in a single day. The number of cases recorded in Kamrup (Metro) has also increased, with 164 cases reported on Monday compared to 78 the day before.
Assam has seen an increase in daily COVID-19 cases, with health officials expressing concern over the virus’s identification among international visitors to the state in recent days.
Between December 1 and December 30, 2021, 29 international travellers tested positive for COVID-19 in Assam, according to reports.
Since Saturday, the number of positive cases among flight travellers entering the state has increased dramatically. On Monday, 18 of these travellers were said to have tested positive for the virus.
While no Omicron cases have been detected in Assam so far, Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) superintendent Abhijit Sarma expressed concern about the increased number of international travellers during the festive season, saying that while no Omicron cases have been detected in Assam so far, there is a need to take precautions by following COVID guidelines.
On New Year’s Eve, 192 cases were reported against 24,817 tests with an overall positivity rate of 0.77 percent while 150-cases was reported on New Year’s Day against 19,602 tests with an overall positivity rate of 0.77 percent.
Active COVID cases in Assam stand at 1270 cases till Monday evening, with the only new restriction in place being the imposition of a night curfew from 11.30 am to 5 am, which was however relaxed on December 31, 2021 and January 1, 2022.

The number of active COVID cases in Assam has risen to 1270 as of Monday evening, with the only new limitation being the installation of a night curfew from 11.30 p.m. to 5 a.m., which was removed on December 31, 2021, and January 1, 2022, possibly attributed to the increase in cases. While other states put tighter restrictions during the New Year’s celebrations to prevent massive crowds, Assam and its neighbour Meghalaya lifted the night curfew, which led people to gather.
