Anurag Kashyap sought treatment for depression: When my daughter was being harassed and threatened with rape on Twitter

Anurag Kashyap discussed the moment when he went through a difficult time and visited a rehab facility three times. The director discussed how he managed his depression for more than three years in a recent interview. Anurag remembered that his daughter Aaliyah Kashyap "began having anxiety attacks" at about the same time. When Anurag left Twitter in 2019, he also mentioned how his daughter was receiving rape threats and being harassed. The director also claimed that despite his struggles with depression at a particularly dark time in his life, he continued to work. 

Anurag claimed that the amount of hatred on the social media site caused him to stop using Twitter. Anurag previously claimed that he cancelled his Twitter account in 2019 as a result of threats made on his daughter and parents.

Anurag told The Indian Express about the time he spoke against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and went to Jamia Millia Islamia University to participate in anti-CAA protests: "This was the time I went off Twitter because my daughter started getting trolled, getting rape threats, and she started getting anxiety attacks... So, in August 2019 I stopped using Twitter and travelled to Portugal. When the Jamia Millia incident occurred, I was in London filming this (Almost Pyaar With DJ Mohabbat). 

I returned to India. I said, "I can't stand it that no one is speaking up," "yeh mujh se bardaaasht nahin ho raha hai," and "koi kuchh bol nahin ho raha hai." I resumed my Twitter conversations. In the same interview, Anurag Kashyap also discussed having a heart attack last year and how his health declined. Last year, the director had an angioplasty. The director talked about resting and getting back to making movies. I don't have the luxury to sit and wait like other people do, he remarked. 

In a recent conversation with Tanmay Bhatt, Anurag talked openly about his daughter receiving rape threats on Twitter and the effect it had on Aaliyah Kashyap. He said, "I have a wonderful daughter. She genuinely is expressing herself publicly, but I find her worry disturbing. After those threats and other things of that nature, her anxiousness increased. She returned here while I dropped everything to flee to the US due to her worry. Except for her anxiety problems, she is fantastic." 

At the 19th Marrakech Film Festival, Anurag's film Almost Pyaar With Dj Mohabbat, starring Alaya F and Karan Mehta, recently had its international premiere. The film, which is being made by Zee Studios and Anurag Kashyap's Good Bad Films, is slated for release in January 2023. Dobaaraa, starring Taapsee Pannu, was the filmmaker's most recent motion picture.
