Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, announced on Monday that in order to lighten the load on the lower judiciary, his administration will drop one lakh minor cases, including those involving social media posts.
Four lakh cases are currently languishing in the lower judiciary, according to Sarma, who hoisted the national flag at the 75th Independence Day event in Guwahati.
Minor lawsuits filed before 12:01 a.m. on August 14, 2021, will be withdrawn, the government has determined, he said.
The judiciary will then be able to concentrate on more serious crimes like rapes and murders, he continued.
Sarma asserted that Assam is an integral part of India and urged those who still harbour “sovereignty” dreams to come back to the negotiation table.
He appeared to be sending a message to the militant organisations ULFA(I) and NSCN, which have demanded a “boycott” of Independence Day celebrations and a “complete shutdown” in five Northeastern states, including Assam. He said: “Sovereignty is non-negotiable and Assam would never leave India.”
