Over three months after Assam and Mizoram police clashed at the inter-state boundary leading to six deaths, the chief ministers of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma and Chief Minister of Mizoram Zoramthanga met at Assam House today evening for a meeting .
when asked by the news agency ANI Assam’s CM HB Sarma said that ,”Mizoram CM Zoramthanga is on a 7-day visit to Delhi, so I took that opportunity & invited him for a dinner. We had dinner & had a little conversation. Tomorrow, both of us will try to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Today we just talked & enjoyed our dinner”.
while speaking to the reporters Mizoram’s CM Zoramthanga added that ,”I was invited by Himanta ji for dinner since we’re good friends, like brothers. We had a very good time. Tomorrow, we hope to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah together. We tried to increase the friendship that we’ve had all along, we had a very fine time.”
Also the two ministers are scheduled to to hold a meeting in Delhi on Thursday to resolve the border issues and build a friendly relation between both the states .
The 165 km Assam-Mizoram border has many stretches of dispute which have time and again led to clashes between civilians and police forces. This July it precipitated into a major crisis when police forces of the two states clashed at the Kolasib-Vairengte border leading to six Assam policemen dying and several, including the district SP, sustaining injuries.
An alarmed Centre tried to mediate by sending central forces and nudging the two states to talk but a standoff continued for days. It was in August that two states officially engaged through top officials in Aizawl.
Following the first government-level talks between the states since the July 26 border incident, representatives of the two states resolved to not have any “fresh deployment” in the disputed areas and a joint statement was released.
