Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma bans PFI

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the Centre’s decision to ban the Popular Front of India (PFI) for alleged terror activities, saying the country is “bold and decisive” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The PFI and several of its affiliated organisations were outlawed by the Union Home Ministry on Tuesday night.

“The administration is steadfast in its determination to deal with anyone with a devilish, divisive, or disruptive design against India with an iron fist,” the chief minister wrote on Twitter. “Modi’s India is resolute and bold,” he added. Sarma had previously stated that his government had repeatedly requested that the Centre prohibit the organisation for allegedly fostering an eco-system for terrorist activities. The central government’s decision came only days after a statewide crackdown on the 16-year-old PFI, which included the arrest of over a hundred of its members and the seizure of several dozen homes. So far, the Assam Police have detained 36 PFI activists from various parts of the state and New Delhi.

Following a raid on the organisation by different agencies led by the National Investigation Agency, police nabbed 25 activists from eight districts of Assam on Tuesday, while 11 more were detained on September 22-23. (NIA). On Tuesday, more than 170 persons with PFI ties were apprehended across seven states, following the arrest of 106 PFI leaders and members five days earlier.
