The state government in Assam to shut down 34 schools of SEBA board after none of their students who appeared for Class 10 examinations passed. The High School Leaving Certificate or (HSLC) exam was appeared by about 1000 students from these 34 school . Seven schools are from Karbi Anglong district, 5 each from Jorhat and Cachar, 2 each from Dhubri, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Nagaon and 1 each from Golaghat, Kamrup, Kokrajhar, Nalbari, Hailakandi, West Karbi Anglong Chirang, Darrang and Dibrugarh districts.
It is, reportedly, Assam’s worst overall result of five year. Apart from the above school another 16 school of SEBA board has the passing rate of less than 10 percentage.
Education Minister of Assam, Dr Ranoj Pegu, said that it is meaningless to spend public’s money on such schools that cannot ensure their students passed class X exams.
“The primary duty of schools is to impart education. If a school`s result in the HSLC examination is zero, then it is better not to have such school operational. There is no point to spend taxpayer`s money on school with zero success rate,” Dr Ranoj Pegu said.
The state’s Education Minister also said that these schools will be merged with other neighbouring schools, which will in turn lessen the number of school. “And for this merging process, some schools will be shut down. It is a continuous process, there are around 2000-2500 such proposals in the state and we are examining it and we are trying our best to keep these schools.”
The official has blamed the lockdown of Covid-19 for the HSLC exam’s result. The online classes were not as effective as offline teaching-learning process. Moreover, the returing back to the physical Board examination also might have contributed to the decline, said officials.
