Assam: Six groups calls for a statewide bandh on November 15 to demand ST status

The Hindu reported on Saturday that six ethnic groups in Assam have demanded a statewide bandh on November 15 to advocate for their demand for Scheduled Tribe designation.
Soy Janagosthi Joutha Mancha is the name given to the bandh by the forum. The Morans, Muttocks, Koch Rajbongshis, Tai Ahoms, and Chutiyas are among the Adivasis, also known as "tea tribes."

The list of Other Backward Classes in Assam now includes all six communities. They represent more than 30% of Assam's electorate collectively.

The Tai-Ahom Yuba Parishad's general secretary, Diganta Tamuli, issued a warning on Saturday, saying that the six tribes will engage in anti-BJP campaigning if they were not recognised as Schedule Tribes before the 2024 general elections.
According to Tamuli, "We would not permit any BJP agenda to succeed.", The Hindu reported. The Assam Adivasi Students Union's Stephen Lakra accused the BJP of having no interest in seeing the bill passed.

The group will stage a protest in Delhi on November 30 in addition to the statewide dharna on November 15.
