Pulak Gogoi, a renowned artist and filmmaker, dies at age 84
He has so far produced nine movies, and one of them won the National Award for Best Regional Film in 1993 and the Film Fare Award for Best Assamese Film in 2014. Pulak Gogoi, a well-known filmmaker and artist who was a pillar of the arts and culture, passed away on Saturday morning in Guwahati after a protracted illness. He was 84 years old.
Gogoi, who had been receiving care at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) for a while, passed away this morning at 8:30 a.m.
"I am saddened by the news of the passing away of eminent film director and renowned painter and cartoonist Pulak Gogoi, a prominent figure in the cultural world of Assam," the Assam CM wrote on Twitter after learning of the veteran artist's passing. "Gogoi, who has spent a significant amount of time working persistently to improve Assamese painting and cinema, gave the world several notable Assamese films and held a distinctive place. I offer the Bereaves family my sincere condolences and ask God to grant his righteous soul eternal rest "Sarma went on to say.
Pulak Gogoi, regarded as one of Assam's first cartoonists, started out in the magazine Asam Bani from 1963 to 1964 as a cartoonist before moving on to The Assam Tribune group's Dainik Asam. He launched his own business in 1967 as the editor of the cartoon magazine, which ran for five years, from 1967 to 1972. Gogoi kept working as a freelance political cartoonist for publications like Sadin, Abikal, and others.
With the assistance of the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) Art Society, he conducted numerous solo shows both inside and outside of Assam, notably in the United States.
Pulak Gogoi made his cinematic debut with "Khoj" in 1974.
His notable movies include Patnee (1999), Relar Alir Dubari Bon (1993), Morom Nodir Gabharu Ghat (1999), Sendur (1984), Sadari (1983), and Srimati Mahimamoyee (1978).
