Assam: Under tight security, Barshashree Buragohain sits for the semester exam in Golaghat Jail
The undergraduate student Barshashree Buragohain, who has been confined to Golaghat jail for more than two months, sat for her semester exam on Saturday (July 16) under tight security. The 19-year-old was granted permission by a court here to take the examination in Golaghat jail in Assam under tight security. Buragohain was arrested on May 18 from Uriamghat in Golaghat district and charged under the UAPA for writing ”Akou Korim Rashtra Droh” (Will Again Rebel Against the Nation).
In an interview with reporters, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said that writing poetry is not bad. I too write poetry, but Barshashree was apprehended only because she wrote that she would be joining the ULFA. Barshashree’s arrest, who is a student of mathematics at an undergraduate level, has sparked widespread criticism throughout the state.
On the other side, GP Singh, the Special Director General of Police (Law and Order), stated earlier in a Twitter post, “Her Facebook post makes a clear invitation to engage in armed conflict with the State. We are required by law to bring charges against someone who publicly announces support for a prohibited organisation and the intention to wage war against the Indian state. A chargesheet must be submitted to a court of law after the appropriate procedure. Allow the law to run its course “.
