On Thursday, Assam Police raided a West Bengal-based interstate child trafficking ring. They rescued 48 youngsters, including four women, and brought them to Assam. According to reports, minors were coerced into child labour after being trafficked from Assam to West Bengal.
Meanwhile, the Assam Police have established an experimental division in the CID headquarters headed by an SP-rank officer to deal with crimes against women and children, in addition to the establishment of special cells for women in 11 districts in collaboration with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS).
Today, the CID convened a conference of all stakeholders, including senior officials from the police, social justice, education, health, labour, and other agencies. TISS and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were also represented at the gathering. According to ADGP (CID) AYV Krishna, at least 123 traffickers will be apprehended in Assam in 2021, with 110 children among 279 victims rescued. “Special Juvenile Police units are currently functioning in 11 districts, led by a DSP/ASP, and each police station has a child welfare officer.” In 320 police stations, we established women’s support desks,” he continued.
