Assam's Battle of Alaboi site to have a war memorial; 100-foot sword to attract visitors
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma posted a 3D model of the war memorial that was recently issued by the state government on his social media accounts.
The Assam government recently undertook a number of efforts, including the construction of two memorials, one in Guwahati and the other in Jorhat, to honour the sacrifices and bravery of the Ahom army. A memorial with an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore will be built on the outskirts of the state capital Guwahati, the site of the 17th-century Battle of Alaboi between the Ahom army and the Mughals. The Hengang (Ahom sword), which stands 100 feet tall and is located in the memorial's centre, will be its main draw.

Sarma tweeted a 3D model of the future memorial along with the statement, "'Alaboi Ranakshetra' being built at Alaboi, Kamrup, at a cost of Rs150 cr over 75 bigha of land and to feature a 100-foot Hengdang will be Assam's glorious tribute to the valour & supreme sacrifice of 10,000 Ahom soldiers martyred in the Battle of Alaboi.

At an estimated cost of Rs 120 crore, a second memorial to Ahom general Lachit Barphukan would be built in Jorhat.
Lachit Barphukan led the Ahom army during the famous battle of Saraighat, which took place in 1671. The Mughal incursion into the Assamese territory was fiercely resisted by Barphukan and his gallant warriors, who stopped them in their tracks.
The week-long celebrations for the 400th birthday of Ahom general Lachit Barphukan got under way on Friday with a march past of various uniformed men and women to honour the bravery and sacrifice he shown in repelling the Mughal army. All the state's institutions, including the police, the government, schools, and cultural organisations, are planning a number of activities.
From November 23 to 25, the celebration's final stop will be at Vigyaan Bhawan in the nation's capital.
On November 23, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will officially open an exhibition. On November 24, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will serve as the event's special guest, and on November 25, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will perform the exhibition's closing ceremony.
