Nitish Kumar resigned as chief minister of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar and filed a letter of support from 160 parliamentarians in order to lay a claim to form the government as part of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-led coalition.
“I am resigning… “The decision to leave the NDA was made by the party,” Kumar stated after meeting with Governor Phagu Chauhan.
Kumar resigned following discussions with his legislators. The discussions were part of a series of meetings held in Bihar on Tuesday, during which the RJD, Congress, and Left parties declared they were willing to work with Kumar if he left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Shakil Ahmed Khan stated that an RJD-JD (U) government will be established in Bihar. “…We have always desired a government that is pro-people and follows the values of justice and secularism,” Khan added. Kumar, he claimed, will remain as chief minister.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, a member of the Grand Alliance, had not yet decided whether to join the administration. The party’s politburo meeting was scheduled for 5 p.m. to consider the issue.
