On Monday, a 22-year-old pilgrim’s body was airlifted to Kolkata after she was killed while attempting to save her mother from a flash flood and landslide that struck the Amarnath shrine base camp in Kashmir. Later in the day was scheduled for the funeral of Barsha Muhuri, a native of Baruipur near Kolkata who loved to travel and was pursuing her PhD.
At order to travel to the Amarnath shrine, Muhuri, her mother Nibedita, and uncle Subrata Chowdhury left Kolkata on July 1 and arrived in Pahalgam on July 5. On July 16, they were supposed to return home.
A relative, Swarup Muhuri, claimed that when the flash flood hit, Barsha Muhuri attempted to save her mother from being washed away. “Barsha was swept away and drowned, but Nibedita was saved. On Sunday, her body was discovered.
Since the event on Friday, there have been at least 16 confirmed fatalities. While working against the clock, rescuers gathered support from the Indian Army and Air Force.
