The darker regions visible on satellite photographs are coronal holes, which are located in the "corona," the outermost layer of the sun. According to an earlier NASA statement, "They're areas on the sun where the magnetic field is open to interplanetary space, sending solar material racing out in a high-speed torrent of solar wind."
Since they frequently have lower temperatures and densities than their surroundings, they typically appear as black blotches or, in this case, facial characteristics, giving the scene a hollow appearance.
Coronal holes can happen at any moment, but neither the human eye nor a home telescope can see them since they are only visible in ultraviolet and X-ray radiation, according to LiveScience.
