CWG 2022: Manipur’s Sushila Devi wins silver in judo; becomes first Indian to win multiple medals in Judo CWG.

Manipur’s Sushila Devi earned a silver medal in judo on Monday in the women’s 48kg division after falling to South African Michaela Whitebool in the championship match via Waza-ari during the golden score period. The final contest between Sushila Devi and Whitebool was particularly intense since neither of the judokas let the other dominate. Up until the last whistle, the two engaged in a furious battle. After that, there was a competition during the golden score time, and Whitebool won the gold medal. Sushila Devi’s shoulder was forced to contact the mat, earning her one point.

Priscilla Morand of Mauritius was defeated by Sushila in the women’s 48 kg semifinals. Morand was defeated by Manipur’s 27-year-old judoka with a “Ippon.” Ippon is a wager in which one person drops another person to the ground so quickly and violently that the other person ends up on his back. Sushila advanced to the quarterfinals earlier in the day by defeating Malawian Harriet Bonface by ippon. With this she becomes the first Indian to win multiple medals in Judo CWG.

Sushila also took home a silver medal during the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She additionally took home the bronze medal at the 2015 Junior Asian Championships.
