Cyclone Mandous: Red Alert in 13 Tamil Nadu districts; heavy rain predicted

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, the severe cyclone "Mandous" is forecast to move west-northwestward and cross the coast between Puducherry and Sriharikota during the nights of December 9 and 10. The strong cyclone, according to the weather organization, is approximately 240 km east-southeast of Karaikal in the southwest Bay of Bengal. With winds gusting to 85 kmph, Mandous will pass right along the coasts of north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and neighboring south Andhra Pradesh.

The Met department predicts that most locations in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Karaikal area will get light to moderate rain on Friday. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in some places with isolated extremely heavy rain to fall across the Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Villupuram districts of Tamilnadu and Puducherry.
Over the Tamilnadu districts of Tiruvallur, Chennai, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore, isolated areas are likely to see heavy to very severe rain. Over the Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Karur, Dindigul, Madurai, and Sivaganga districts of Tamilnadu and Karaikal, heavy rain is predicted to fall in isolated locations.
13 districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chengalpattu, Villupuram, and Kancheepuram, have been placed on red alert.
