Rescuers are looking for survivors buried under the wreckage amid a series of aftershocks after a strong earthquake shook Indonesia's main island of Java, killing 162 people and wounding hundreds more. The 5.6 magnitude earthquake's epicentre was close to the town of Cianjur in West Java's mountainous region, around 75 kilometres (45 miles) southeast of the nation's capital, Jakarta. More than 2.5 million people reside in the area.

Governor of West Java Ridwan Kamil revealed the latest death toll in the remote region, saying that many of the victims were public school pupils who had finished their day's classes and were attending after-hours classes at various Islamic institutions when they collapsed.

According to Kamil, more than 13,000 people who had severely damaged homes were moved to evacuation centres. 326 other people have suffered injuries, he claimed on his Instagram page.
