The South Korean government’s YouTube channel was supposedly hacked on Saturday in order to broadcast a video featuring Tesla CEO Elon Musk talking about cryptocurrencies, but it has already been restored, according to sources.
At 3.30 a.m., the official government channel on the video-sharing website looked to have been hacked since its name was changed to “SpaceX Invest” and it was broadcasting a live cryptocurrency interview with American billionaire and SpaceX creator Musk.
According to a representative of the ministry of culture and tourism, which oversees the YouTube account, the problem was discovered at 6 a.m., security steps were taken, and the account was restored at 7:20 a.m.
The representative claimed that it was believed that the account’s ID and password had been stolen.
Google, the parent company of YouTube, acknowledged that the channel had been hacked, According to Yonhap news agency.
The attack also followed a hack of a YouTube channel operated by the Korea Tourism Organisation (KTO), under the tourism ministry, earlier this week.
The channel, which has about 509,000 members, was reportedly targeted twice, once on Thursday and again on Friday. The channel is not accessible right now.
According to a KTO representative, Google immediately disables access to the account if it detects strange connections.
