Fierce storm wreaked havoc in Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya
After a heavy storm caused havoc in Ri Bhoi district and parts of Shillong on Thursday morning, at least over 60 villages were impacted.
Umsning, Bhoirymbong, and Umroi are among the locations that have been severely impacted by the storm. Trees were uprooted and rooftops were blown away, according to images shared on social media. Many public and private properties were also damaged. However, there had been no reports of any injuries so far.
Apart from dwellings, Raja Brahma, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Umsning C&RD Block, claimed that the PWD and Veterinary departments’ offices were also seriously destroyed.
The control room has been activated to provide aid to the affected communities, and a team of officials has been deployed from the headquarters in Nongpoh to assess the situation.
The East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner had issued an advisory earlier on Wednesday after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted thunderstorms with lightning and very heavy rains. However, people were also cautioned to stay vigilant and alert.
