The World Cup match between Germany and Costa Rica on Thursday, which will be officiated by Stephanie Frappart, will mark the first time a woman has refereed a match at a men's World Cup, according to a FIFA announcement on Tuesday.
Three female referees, including France's Frappart, Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda, and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan, were chosen from among the 36 to work the event in Qatar.
Three additional female officials are serving as assistance referees at the World Cup.

The 38-year-old Frappart is continuing her quick ascent to the top of Europe by officiating her men's World Cup match. She officiated the women's World Cup final in her native nation as well as France's Ligue 1 for the first time as a woman in 2019.
Before officiating the 2020 Champions League and the 2017 French Cup finals, Frappart presided over the 2019 UEFA Super Cup final between Liverpool and Chelsea.
