In light of the controversy surrounding Lovlina Borgohain’s coach Sandhya Gurung, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) acting president Anil Khanna said on Thursday that “the needs of Indian athletes during multi-sporting events are a tad more hard to satisfy than others”.
After arriving in the city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Borgohain had alleged that her preparations were being hampered because of “the continuous harassment” her coaches were facing from the authorities, including Gurung.
She wanted Gurung to be part of the CWG contingent, and the IOA accepted her request at the last minute. Karanjeet Singh, the boxing contingent’s authorised team doctor, had to be moved outside the Games Village in order for Gurung to enter.
“It is more difficult to meet the needs of Indian athletes than of others because they react too quickly. A sense of cooperation among the athletes is not always present “Khanna, who is in town, told PTI.
“As Lovlina is an Olympic medalist, we had to comply with her request.” The boxing team’s doctor is also knowledgeable. He, like many of our officials and coaches, is staying outside the village. “Transportation is being organised, there is no problem at all,” Khanna emphasized.
