On Monday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a new five-day warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds in the northeast. Under the influence of strong southwesterly winds flowing from the Bay of Bengal, the Met Office has projected heavy rain for Assam and Meghalaya.
On Tuesday, the IMD issued a thunderstorm with lightning warning for isolated areas in Arunachal Pradesh. On Tuesday, it is forecasting thundersqualls with wind speeds of 50-60 kmph as well as hailstorm in isolated areas over Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Mizoram, according to the IMD.
“Fairly widespread rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura in the next five days due to southwesterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to northeastern states at lower tropospheric levels,” said an IMD senior official.
Many regions in Assam and Meghalaya are expected to see light to moderate rainfall on Wednesday, and most places on Thursday and Friday, with isolated heavy rains. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected to lash the states over the period, along with strong winds (40-50 km/h).
