Indian Women outshining in the Tokyo Olympics 2020: Northeast Gems added more shine

The rise of Manipur in Indian sports has been phenomenal. Right from weightlifting, boxing to football. It has not only made the Northeast proud but entire India is cheering for the win. Northeast has given the finest talent in the sports world right from Kunjarani Devi, Sarita Devi, Bembem Devi, Mary Kom to Mirabai Chanu.

This time Mirabai Chanu made India extremely proud by winning the first medal for the nation. Mirabai Chanu became the second Indian woman to win an Olympic silver. She occupied second place in the women’s 49kg to win India’s first medal at Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Chanu broke the world record in women’s 49kg weightlifting as she lifted an astonishing 119kg in clean and jerk in the 2020 Asian Championship.

On the other hand, another gem of the Northeast India MC Mary Kom defeated Miguelina Hernandez Garcia from the Dominican Republic in the opening round match in the 51kg category.

Manika Batra and PV Sindhu also advanced to the next round of their respective events. Manika Batra had an inspirational 3- 4 win against Margaryta Pesotska of Ukraine in the second round of the women’s singles table tennis event.

PV Sindhu won her women’s singles first round match against Israel’s Ksenia Polikarpova in Badminton.

However, Indian shooters Divyansh Singh Panwar and Deepak Kumar failed to live up to the expectation in the Air Rifle event. Whereas, Manu Bhaker and Yashaswini Singh Deswal could not qualify for the Women’s 10m Air Pistol finals.

Sania Mirza and Ankita Raina, the tennis sensation also lost their fight against Ukraine’s Liudmyla Kichenok and Nadiia Kichenok, Ukraine’s twins, in the first round match.
