HISTORY: India’s First Train Named Sahib, Sultan And Sindh Launched In the Year 1853; Learn More.

The history of Indian Railways dates back to over 160 years ago. On 16th April 1853, the first passenger train ran between Bori Bunder (Bombay) and Thane, a distance of 34 km. It was operated by three locomotives, named Sahib, Sultan and Sindh, and consisted of fourteen carriages and carried about 400 people.

The first full-scale working railway steam locomotive was built in the United Kingdom in 1804 by Richard Trevithick, a British engineer born in Cornwall. This used high-pressure steam to drive the engine by one power stroke. When an Englishman launched the first practical steam locomotive, it averaged less than 10 mph. Today, several high-speed rail lines are regularly travelling 30 times as fast. As you can see in this video module, how fast the trains transformed back then and in modern days.
