HISTORY: On This Day The Greek Conqueror Alexander the Great Was Born To Rule The World
Alexander III of Macedon, also known as Alexander the Great, was the enormous military leader in history and a king of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon. He succeeded his father Philip II to the throne in 336 BC at the age of 20 and spent most of his ruling years conducting a lengthy military campaign throughout Western Asia and Egypt. . On this day in 356 BCE, Alexander the Great is born in Macedon. “There is nothing impossible to him who will try.”
He was one of the greatest leaders in history leading Greece to conquer west Asia and the Middle East. When the Greek emperor Alexander the Great conquered Persia, the Persians called him Sikandar, meaning “defender” or “worrier”.
Alexander “the Great” He is renowned as ‘the Great’ for his military prowess as well as his diplomatic talents in dealing with the many populations of the religions he conquered. He earned the epithet “the Great” because he expanded his vast kingdom and named several cities after himself. Alexander the Great conquered so much territory that he was able to name almost 70 cities after himself and one after his horse.
For through long ages India has been a place of trade. The land of gold and spice, of gems and peacocks. In 327 B.C., the great Greek conqueror Alexander found his way to India. Having subdued Syria, Egypt, and Persia, the next marched to invade the unknown land of gold.
The part of India which Alexander invaded is called Punjab, or the land of the five rivers. At that time it was ruled by a king called Porus. He was the overlord of Punjab, and under him were many other princes. Some of these princes were ready to rebel against Porus, and they welcomed Alexander gladly. But Porus gathered a great army and came marching against the Greek invader.
Porus has been defeated. Alexander was cordial to him and treated him as a great king and warrior would treat equally to another great king and warrior. They became acquaintances as a result.
However, he died young in June 323 B.C., at the age of 32. Some historians believe Alexander died of natural causes, while others believe he was poisoned. His final breath was taken in Babylon, which is now known as Iran.
